Up until a few years ago the simple chore of food shopping in Dubrovnik used to be a little tedious. Driving from one store to the other just to find the products you wanted was not only time consuming but also frustrating. However it recent years a number of new larger supermarkets have opened in the city making food shopping a lot easier. Here is a list of the major supermarkets in Dubrovnik:
Lidl Dubrovnik – Located in Župa around a ten minute drive from the centre of Dubrovnik this store opened a few years ago and is similar in size to other Lidl’s across Europe. The store runs special offers every Thursday and can be a little crowded then. The are many international brands to be found in the store, some that you can’t find in other supermarkets and every month they hold an international week, which has included British cuisines. This is the only store in Dubrovnik that I’ve managed to find Baked Beans inside. There is ample parking and trolleys require either a 2 Kuna or 5 Kuna coin to obtain. Apart from food the store also sells some household goods.
Getro Dubrovnik – Located opposite from Lidl this is one of the largest supermarkets in Dubrovnik. Getro has the feel of a cash and carry store and many restaurants and cafés in Dubrovnik use the supermarket to buy produce. They have a relatively large selection of fruit and vegetables and there are also a separate butchers and bakers inside the shop. Many foreign brands can be found inside the store, such as HP sauce and Digestive biscuits. There is a free covered parking and the trolleys require a 5 Kuna piece, there is also a toilet inside.
Konzum Dubrovnik – Konzum is the largest Croatian owned chain of supermarkets and there are many stores in Dubrovnik. The largest Konzum in Dubrovnik is located in the Gruž harbour and is slightly bigger than Getro. This is a mega Konzum and therefore not only sells food and drink but also household goods, electrical products and clothes. It has an in-store butchers, bakers and fishmonger. The range of products is good and there are also many international brands. The Konzum superstore runs many special offers and has a good loyalty program. There is a smaller Konzum inside the Old City (high prices) and just outside the city walls on Ploče (also expensive). Trolleys require a 5 Kuna coin.
Pemo Dubrovnik – Pemo is the only larger supermarket in Dubrovnik that is locally owned. It is located in downtown Dubrovnik opposite the road from Zagrebacka banka and has its own parking behind the store. The highlight of the Pemo store is the in-house butchers which has one of the best reputations in the city. The superstore has a little cramped feel, due to a low ceiling, and prices can be higher than the larger stores. In the same building there is an electronics store, a sports shop and haberdashery. Trolleys don’t require coins. Beware there tends to be long queues at peak times
Mercator Dubrovnik – Mercator is located in Srebreno in Zupa Dubrovnik around a ten minutes drive from Dubrovnik. A very clean and easy to use supermarket Mercator has a good selection of products as well as international products. There is a large vegetable section as well as a good in-store butchers and bakers. They also produce ready-to-eat meals which are great for days out on the beach. Above they store is a clothes store. There is ample parking outside the supermarket and trolleys don’t require any coins.
Tommy Dubrovnik – Located in the business area of the city (near to Pemo) Tommy is a medium sized supermarket. Similar in size to Pemo this supermarket is a little badly organised and products aren’t always the best. There is a free car park behind the store and a busy bus-stop right outside. Above the store there is a small shopping centre with a shoe shop, clothes shop, etc. Also right by the entrance to the shop there is a very good bakers that sells some of the bets bread in town.
